Lisbon Sun Setters

Our story began in 2023, as a group of friends that had started playing Beach Volleyball together at Carcavelos Beach. We realised that it was quite difficult to get into the sport, as it was not easy to join games on the public nets if you didn't know how to play — and there was nobody giving lessons or tips for beginners. The people playing at the beach consisted largely of small and exclusive groups that didn't cross over very much.

So we decided to try and make a change. We started organising trainings and tournaments, in order to bring people together and to make the sport more accessible.

What started as a small group of friends quickly grew into something much bigger. People from all walks of life — locals and expats, beginners and experienced players — started showing up, connecting, and building friendships on the sand. We realised we were onto something special.

But we wanted to be about more than just growing a sport. Inspired by the people and community forming around us, we wanted to create something that gives back. Something that gives back to the place we live, and the people in it.

And so, the Lisbon Sun Setters Association was born, and officially created in January 2024.

It has been a highly rewarding experience, as it is no exaggeration to say we were making it up as we went along, and we've all had to learn by doing.

But that's what makes Lisbon Sun Setters special: we're not a finished product — we're a living, growing community, shaped by everyone who joins us.
